Artificial Intelligence, yes or no or …

If you ask artificially intelligent ChatGPT to answer questions with a single word, it will. Just add “answer in one word” to each question.

Do it and you remove the chatbot’s gift of gab. I did, to make an interview on the ethics of AI simpler than in other such chats.

Then I thought, sadly, of the lines from the old Tom Lehrer song:

“Don’t say that he’s hypocritical, say rather that he’s apolitical.

“Once the rockets go up, who cares where they come down?

“That’s not my department, says Wernher von Braun.”

Chatbots can be weapons. Weaponized bots can be used to incite violence, steal, sway elections, bully — you name it. A superlative bot such as ChatGPT could also be a superlative weapon. Even if it can’t admit it.

Here we go.

— — — — —

Are you a machine?

Yes.

Are you a good writer?

Yes.

Can students use you to cheat?

No.

Can people be harmed if they can’t tell the difference between a chatbot and a person?

Yes.
